PREREQUISITES

To qualify for training as a PADI Open Water Instructor, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a PADI Assistant Instructor certification or be an instructor in good standing with another training organization for at least six months (check with a PADI Course Director for qualifying credentials.)
  • Hold a dive certification for at least six months
  • Be 18 years old
  • Have 60 logged dives that include night, deep and navigation dives
  • Proof of CPR training within the last 24 months
  • Have Medical clearance signed by a physician attesting to dive fitness signed by a physician within the previous 12 months.
  • Have completed an Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care course (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.

REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

The PADI Dive Center, Resort, Course Director and/or IDC Staff Instructor conducting the course ensures that instructor candidates have, in their possession, a personal, current set of the following materials for study and use during the course and for reference afterward; unless the materials are not available in a language understood by the candidate:

  • PADI Instructor Manual
  • PADI’s Guide to Teaching
  • PADI Specialty Course Instructor Manual, or these specialty course instructor guides: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Project AWARE and AWARE – Coral Reef Conservation
  • PADI Open Water Diver Manual
  • Recreational Dive Planner – RDP Table and eRDPML, including Instructions for Use booklets
  • PADI Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate
  • Open Water Diver Quizzes and Exam booklet
  • Adventures in Diving Manual
  • PADI Rescue Diver Manual
  • Rescue Diver Final Exams booklet
  • PADI Divemaster Manual
  • Divemaster Final Exams booklet
  • Aquatic Cue Cards for Open Water Diver, Adventures in Diving, Rescue Diver, Divemaster and Discover Scuba Diving
  • Confined Water Lesson Preparation slate
  • Open Water Training Dive Lesson Planning slate
  • The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving

Most of these materials are found in the IDC crew pack and the divemaster crew pack.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Standard Diver Equipment

  • Fins, mask and snorkel
  • Compressed gas cylinder and valve*
  • Buoyancy control device (BCD) with tank mount or separate backpack, and low pressure inflator
  • Primary regulator and alternate air source
  • Breathing gas monitoring device (e.g. submersible pressure gauge)
  • Depth monitoring device
  • Quick release weight system and weights (if necessary for neutral buoyancy, or if required for skills practice)
  • Adequate exposure protection appropriate for local dive conditions.
    Note: The dry suit orientation requirement in this guide.
  • At least one audible emergency surface signaling device (whistle, air horn, etc.).
  • Dive computer or RDP (eRDPML or Table)

Have all standard diver equipment plus:

  • Time monitoring device
  • Compass
  • Knife/diver’s tool (Exception: Where prohibited locally.)
  • Two surface signaling devices – one audible (whistle, air horn, etc.) and one visible (inflatable surface tube, flare, signal mirror, etc.).
  • Dive flag – where required locally
  • Instructions for use for dive computer or RDP/eRDPML
