You do not have to be a historian to discover the wonders of a ship wreck or other curious finds below the surface of our waters.
Whether purpose sunk as an artificial reef or the result of misfortune, wrecks open fascinating windows to the past. Most divers find wrecked ships, airplanes and even automobiles nearly irresistible because they’re intriguing to explore, exciting avenues of history, and usually teeming with aquatic life. The PADI Wreck Diver course teaches you the ins and outs of rewarding, responsible wreck diving.
The fun part of the PADI Wreck Diver course is visiting wrecks, unlocking mysteries and starting to gain the knowledge and experience that allows you to see things that others overlook. Wrecks can be ominous, but when you descend into the depths and a haunting shell of an old schooner, or massive freighter starts to appear in the shadows, it is truly incredible. Sometimes, only the trained, experienced eye recognizes that a small hole or open door likely caused the vessel’s demise. Whether you wish to dive the numerous wrecks that have been well preserved here in the Great Lakes or travel abroad to search for sunken treasures, there will be something interesting to see where the past meets the present at the bottom of the sea floor.
There are many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws that guard their historical and cultural significance. Your training starts by reviewing guidelines for researching and respecting wrecks. During four dives you’ll learn:
Only Basic scuba diving equipment is required for the course, however you will learn about suggestive add-ons to get you the most of your wreck diving experiences.
You’ll Need: Wreck-Pak, which includes the PADI Wreck Diver Manual and Wreck Diving video.
Must be a PADI Adventure Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization) and be at least 15 years old.
Many shipwrecks are often found in deeper water. That’s why the PADI Wreck Diver course is a natural companion to the PADI Deep Diver course. Sometimes you can take these two specialties concurrently. Other training to consider is the PADI Enriched Air Diver course, as all these specialities are credited toward your PADI Master Scuba Diver.
