Preparing Your Gear for Summer Diving

Is Your Equipment Ready for Dive Season?

After a long winter, many divers are eager to get back underwater. Local dive sites are opening up, weekend adventures are filling the calendar, and we’re already exploring Gullivers, Tobermory, and booking trips to Brockville, Picton & beyond.

But before you jump into your first dive of the season, it’s worth taking a few minutes to make sure your equipment is ready too.

A pre-season equipment check can help identify small issues before they become big problems and ensure your first dives of the year are safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Start with a Visual Inspection

The easiest place to begin is with a thorough visual inspection of all your equipment.

Take everything out of storage and look for signs of:

  • Cracked hoses
  • Worn mouthpieces
  • Frayed straps
  • Damaged buckles
  • Missing O-rings
  • Corrosion on metal components
  • Broken clips or accessories

Many equipment issues are easy to spot before they become a problem at the dive site.

Check Your Regulator

Your regulator is one of the most important pieces of equipment you own.

Before diving:

  • Inspect all hoses for cracks or damage
  • Check the mouthpiece for wear
  • Confirm dust caps are clean and intact
  • Ensure second stages purge properly
  • Verify your annual service has been completed

If your regulator hasn’t been serviced within the manufacturer’s recommended interval, now is the perfect time to bring it in.

Inspect Your BCD

Your Buoyancy Control Device deserves special attention after months in storage.

Check:

  • Inflator operation is smooth, not “sticky”
  • Dump valves all work properly
  • Integrated weight pockets
  • Buckles and straps
  • Bladder integrity

Inflate your BCD fully and let it sit overnight.

If it loses air, it likely requires service before hitting the water.

Verify Your Dive Computer

Your dive computer is likely the most-used piece of equipment in your kit.

Before your first dive:

  • Check battery status
  • Verify date and time settings
  • Review Nitrox settings if applicable
  • Confirm alarms are enabled
  • Ensure the display is functioning properly

A few minutes spent checking your computer can prevent frustration at the dive site.

Don’t Forget Your Cylinders

Check:

  • Hydrostatic test dates
  • Visual inspection dates
  • Valve operation
  • O-rings

A cylinder that is out of hydro or visual inspection won’t be much use when you’re ready to dive.

Examine Exposure Protection

Whether you’re diving wet or dry, your exposure protection deserves a careful inspection.

Wetsuits

Check for:

  • Torn seams
  • Damaged zippers
  • Worn wrist or ankle seals
  • Excessive compression (usually on suits 7+ years old)

Drysuits

Inspect:

  • Wrist seals & spares
  • Neck seal
  • Zipper condition
  • Inflator valve – not “sticky”
  • Exhaust valve

Finding a leak before your first cold-water dive is always preferable to finding one during it.

Check Your Mask, Fins & Snorkel

These simple items often get overlooked.

Inspect:

  • Mask skirt condition
  • Mask strap elasticity
  • Fin straps
  • Buckles and clips
  • Snorkel attachments

Even small cracks can become larger problems once you’re in the water.

Test Your Accessories

Many divers store accessories for months without thinking about them.

Take a few minutes to inspect::

  • SMBs
  • Reels and spools
  • Dive lights
  • Compass
  • Cutting devices
  • Cameras and housings

Replace batteries and verify everything is functioning properly before your next dive.

Refresh Your Save-a-Dive Kit

Every diver should have a basic save-a-dive kit.

Consider stocking::

  • Spare mask strap
  • Fin strap
  • Mouthpiece
  • O-rings
  • Zip ties
  • Silicone grease
  • Basic tools

A small repair kit can save an entire dive weekend.

Update Your Training

The start of a new season is also a great time to refresh your diving knowledge and skills.

Consider:

  • Advanced
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Nitrox
  • Drift Diver
  • Oxygen Provider
  • Rescue Diver
  • Equipment Specialist

A little additional training can significantly improve your comfort and confidence underwater.

Float N’ Flag Tip

The best time to discover an equipment problem is at home—not on the dive boat.

If your gear has been sitting since last season, bring it out, assemble it, and perform a complete inspection before your first dive.

You’ll enjoy greater confidence and spend more time diving instead of troubleshooting equipment issues.
