Does Nitrox Make Sense for Local Diving?
Absolutely.
While many divers associate Nitrox with tropical destinations, it can be equally valuable right here in Ontario.
Nitrox works well for:
- Tobermory weekends
- Brockville drift diving
- Multiple dives in a day
- Training weekends
- Local charter diving
- Repetitive diving over several days
- Divers over 40 years old
Many Ontario divers choose Nitrox whenever it’s available.
What Nitrox Does NOT Do
There are a few common misconceptions about Nitrox, but the most common one is
Nitrox Reduces Air Consumption
You’ll breathe the same amount of gas. Nitrox doesn’t change HOW much you breathe, but WHAT you breathe. With the higher O2 content, most divers report less fatigue after diving.
If you’re breathing heavily on air, you’ll breathe heavily on Nitrox.
Nitrox Does NOT Replace Good Dive Planning
You still need to:
- Monitor depth
- Follow your dive computer
- Plan your dive
- Stay within safe limits
Nitrox Does NOT Make You Invincible
Nitrox is an excellent tool.
But like any tool, it must be used correctly.
That’s why proper training is important.
Is Nitrox Difficult to Learn?
Not at all.
In fact, Nitrox is one of the easiest specialty certifications to achieve.
Most Nitrox courses focus on:
- Understanding oxygen exposure
- Analyzing cylinders
- Setting your dive computer
- Planning Nitrox dives safely
No training dives are required.
The e-learning module takes only 2-3 hours, followed by a short “Practical Application” session at Float N’ Flag.
Is Nitrox Worth It?
If you:
- Travel regularly
- Dive multiple times per day
- Participate in local dive weekends
- Enjoy charter diving
- Want an additional layer of conservatism
then Nitrox is absolutely worth considering.
For many divers, it becomes the certification they use more than any other.
